The Center for Islamic Studies of St. Petersburg State University and the Moscow Islamic Institute, jointly with the Publishing House "Medina", are working on the series "Rebirth and Renewal", which consists of 33 books.

The book series "Al-Islah wa-t-tajdid" consists of three sub-series, gathered according to the chronological principle: "Philosophers of the XIX century", "Philosophers of the XX century" and "Philosophers of the XXI century" with 10 books each. Thus, the reader will be presented with the works of such philosophers as Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817-1898), Jamal ad-din al-Afgani (1838-1897), Muhammad Abdo (1849-1905), Muhammad Rashid Rida (1865-1935), Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938), Fazlur Rahman (1929-1982), Muhammad Arkun (1928-2010), Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd (1943-2010), Sayyid Hossein Nasr (born 1933), Abdulkarim Soroush (born 1945) and many others. The Russian-speaking reader will get acquainted with the works of most of the authors for the first time, which makes the book series a significant scientific activity in the acquaintance, comprehension of the diversity and depth of Islamic reformist thought, covering three centuries and many countries of origin, including Australia, Algeria, Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, etc.

In addition to this, the sub-series of each century is provided with an additional volume – a kind of introduction to the discourse of the authorship of the editor – in-chief of the series-the rector of the Moscow Islamic Institute, Professor of St. Petersburg State University, Executive Secretary of the Muslim International Forum Doctor of Theology Damir Mukhetdinov.

The concept of the book series was developed by a research team of the Center for Islamic Studies of St. Petersburg State University and the Moscow Islamic Institute of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation. The project is being implemented with the blessing of the religious leader of Russian Muslims, Chairman of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation, Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin.

This initiative is an unprecedented project on the scale and significance of the publication of scientific, spiritual and educational literature aimed at the development of Islamic theology in Russia, as well as an important step in the implementation of the program for the revival of the domestic Islamic theological school, designated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The project is funded by the Foundation for the Support of Islamic Culture, Science and Education.

The editorial board of the series was headed by the religious leader of Russian Muslims, Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin. Also the council includes 12 internationally recognized experts in the sphere of Islamic studies, including academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Naumkin, Mikhail Piotrovsky, and Andrey Smirnov.

On 12th of April, 2021, the following works will be presented at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque:

The work of Damir Mukhetdinov "Modern Muslim philosophers", which presents a systematic analysis of the archaizing and renovationist discourses that dominate today in Islamic society. Each of them is considered as a specific approach to religious reform, designed to become the response of the Islamic world to the challenges of European modernity and globalization processes. The author presents the ideas of the most representative philosophers for these discourses, paying attention to the biographical context. The book is not limited exclusively to the description, but provides a unique author's vision of the project of religious reform of the renovationist type. Reformist thought is based on the historical roots of its own tradition and it calls for seeing them in a modern way.

Jamal al-Din al-Afghani's book "The Answer to the Materialists", in which he discusses the relationship between faith and reason, proceeds from the fact that faith, which has passed the test of reason, does not disappear, but becomes purer and stronger and acts as a source of deep transformations in society. The mind, on the other hand, which accepts the provisions of faith as an ethical guide, becomes sensitive to all false holies that claim to take the place of the absolute in human life. Liberation from idols expands the horizons of knowledge and the transformation of the mind. The purpose of al-Afghani's book was to expose one of the idols, namely, "nature" as it is understood in different materialistic teachings. The Islamic philosopher does not reject the concept of "nature" as much as it does not oppose scientific progress, but criticizes the sacralisation of nature and attempts to draw metaphysical conclusions from natural science data.

The work "The Theology of Unity" by the Islamic theologian, philosopher and public figure, the Supreme Mufti of Egypt, Muhammad Abdo, is a monument of religious thought during the Arab-Muslim culture at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, in which the author consistently demonstrates how general ideas about the universe and the absolute are imprinted in the soul of individuals and entire cultures and find their concreteness in their chosen historical path.

The book series will be published in full during 2021-2022 as part of the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the official adoption of Islam by the peoples of Volga Bulgaria and will be a step forward in achieving the strategic goal of reviving the national theological and intellectual heritage of Islam.
