201-domed Tangail Mosque to set Guinness World Record
In the Gopalpur Upazila (district) Tangaila is building a beautiful mosque with 201 domes and a minaret 451 feet high. The founders expect this aesthetically beautiful mosque to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the mosque with the most domes.
An elaborate mosque of modern architecture is being built in the village of Dakkhin Patalia, located about 50 kilometers southwest of the district center and seven kilometers from the center of the upazila (district).
The Rafiq Islam Charitable Foundation is building the mosque, and the initial cost of building the mosque is estimated at around 100 crore.
Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Dhakhin Patalia village and former president of the Bangladesh Bank Employees Federation (CBA), planned to build an aesthetically pleasing mosque in early 2012. Its construction work began on January 13, 2013. The foundation stone was laid by his mother, Rizia Khatun.
Once completed, about 15,000 people will be able to offer prayers at the same time in the two-story mosque, which is being built on 450 hectares of land next to the Jinai River. The mosque is 144 feet long and wide.
The central dome of the mosque is 81 feet high, and 200 other domes, each 17 feet high, were built around the central dome.
Four minarets, each 101 feet high, have already been built at the four corners of the mosque. In addition, four more minarets were built nearby, each 81 feet high.
Another 451-foot-tall minaret is being built next to the mosque, which will be as tall as a 57-story building. Once completed, the minaret will be taller than the Qutub Minar (240 feet) in Delhi.
In the construction of the main entrance to the mosque, brass was used. It is worth noting that rows of slabs brought directly from Egypt were installed around the walls inside the mosque, where the verses of the Noble Koran were inscribed.
Although the mosque will have a complete air conditioning system, it will also have more than a thousand fans installed inside.
A structure similar to the mazar (sanctuary) was also built on the left side of the mosque, where the free space was preserved. It is assumed that the founder of the mosque will be buried there.
Rafikul Islam, the founder of the Fund, in an interview with local journalists expressed the hope that the mosque will enter the Guinness Book of Records and take its place in the history of world mosques.
Also, a number of ministers, officials, foreign diplomats and Islamic scholars from different Muslim countries have already visited the construction of the mosque.
A helipad was also built next to the mosque for the convenience of guests from home and abroad to perform prayers and attend the mosque.
A six-story building is also under construction on the northwestern side of the mosque. The building will include a free hospital for women in distress, an orphanage and a nursing home. According to the founders, there will also be conditions for brave freedom fighters and their families.
In addition, modern hotels and restaurants will also be built in the area, said a member of the mosque construction committee.
They also hope that after the completion of the work, the mosque will be opened by the Imam of the Holy Kaaba Sharif by performing prayers. Prominent citizens, including the President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, will also be invited to the opening ceremony.
