China removes minarets from mosques
China is removing arabic-style elements from mosques while rebuilding them to make them look more "Chinese." The campaign for "Sinification" takes place in Xining.
This area is the capital of Qinghai Province in China, where Hui Muslims live. They make up at least 16 percent of the Xining population.
Hui Muslims are among the 55 ethnic groups recognized by China, and they make up the largest Muslim population in the country.
Another mosque in the same city has also been reconstructed. Domes, minarets and Arabic calligraphy have been replaced with Chinese text and architecture similar to what happened to the Jiaman Mosque in the city of Kira. It was once an outstanding prayer center for Muslims.
However, it is now hidden behind the high walls of Communist Party propaganda with no indication that it has ever been a religious object.
The Weizhou Grand Mosque in Ningxia was completely "Chinese-made". The domes and minarets of the mosque were replaced with tiled pagodas, and Islamic calligraphy was replaced with Chinese writing.
They number almost 10.5 million people, and they are the third largest ethnic group in China. Members of the community are not persecuted by the Chinese authorities like the Uighurs, because "their version of Islam" is reportedly compatible with Chinese concepts and practices.
This is portrayed as inherently "Chinese" rather than as a foreign influence. The community speaks Chinese and even tries to look and behave like Chinese people.
However, Beijing insists on more. Intolerance is now spreading to Islamic architecture.
The 700-year-old Dongguan Mosque in Xining, famous for its white-green dome accompanied by two tall minarets, has now disappeared.
The mosque of the 14th century underwent a complete reconstruction. Now it resembles the office of the Communist Party. China reconstructed the mosque during the year when it violently destroyed the dome and demolished the minarets in the name of integration and national unity.
Hui Muslims have no choice but to agree, since any form of protest can mean imprisonment or a term in one of the "re-education camps".
