Construction of an iconic mosque has begun in India.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the Babri Alternative Mosque took place on Tuesday in the northern Indian state of Ayodhya.

At the beginning of the action, there was a flag-raising ceremony and a trip to the forest plantation. The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation Trust will oversee the project.

The bloody dispute lasted for decades after the 16th-century Babri Mosque in Uttar Pradesh was destroyed by Hindu supporters in 1992, who claimed the site was the birthplace of one of their gods, Rama.

In November 2019, India's highest court ruled that a mosque could be built on the site and ordered a separate plot of land to be set aside for construction.

“The process of construction has officially begun on the Day of the Republic. Soil tests were also carried out on site” " said Atar Hussain, secretary of the foundation.

In addition to the mosque, the foundation also builds a hospital, a museum, a library, a community kitchen, an Indo-Islamic cultural research center, and a publishing house.
The new mosque will be able to accommodate 2,000 worshippers, and will be 4 times larger than the destroyed Babri Mosque.
