Hussein Ibrahim Taha - New General Secretary of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation
In November 2021, the new General Secretary of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha, assumed his duties. He was elected to this position in November 2020 at the 47th meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Niamey (Niger).
He replaced Yousef Ahmed Al-Othaimeen, who left his post in November 2021.
Founded in 1969, the OIC is the second largest intergovernmental organization in the world after the UN, with 57 member states on four continents.
Biography
The new head of the OIC, a diplomat and politician, was born in 1951 in Abeche (Chad).
Taha received his higher education in Paris at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) in 1972.
He started his career in 1979 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chad and headed the Department of Economics and International Relations.
In 1990, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Chadian Embassy in Saudi Arabia.
Taha, was the Ambassador of Chad to Taiwan in 2001. Then he continued his diplomatic career until 2017 as ambassador to France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and the Vatican.
In 2017, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Chad.
He was elected Advisor to the President and Deputy General Secretary in 2019 after fulfilling his ministerial duties, in November 2020, the Government of Chad proposed his candidacy for the post of General Secretary of the OIC.
