Made in the Emirates: artists from the UAE at Sotheby's in Dubai
Exhibited at Sotheby's auction in Dubai among dazzling works of important Islamic jewelry and heritage sites, 20 rare works of the Faberge House and outstanding works of modern Arab art, is a group of contemporary works by prospective UAE artists. Presented by the local public art organization Engage 101, the works of artists from the UAE — Augustine Paredes, Mohammed Khalid, Alaa Edris, Nasir Nasrallah and Sarah Ahly - will be presented at the exhibition without sale as part of Sotheby's "Made in the Emirates", showcases with jewelry and works of art that were created in the UAE.
The past decade has been a historic period for the Emirates. From the opening of museums and major international auction houses to successful art fairs including Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art, the art scene in the UAE has taken off.
The local art platform Engage 101 is one such organization that has emerged as a result of the significant growth of UAE art and culture. The platform for research and collecting, co-founded by curator Munira Al-sAyegh and writer Ghaith Abdullah, hopes that by promoting the work of emerging artists, the UAE, with international and regional collectors, the local art scene will be able to further increase its recognition in the world.
Engage 101 produces quarterly art sales featuring artists who are not represented in galleries, and publishes research and public programs in ever-changing spaces. The DIFC headquarters in Dubai Sotheby's is now one of such premises.
The works presented by Engage 101 will be exhibited together with the main exhibits of the Sotheby's 20th Century Art / Middle East auction, which opens for online bidding on October 20-26. The selection includes an abstract painting by Farelnissa Zeid, six works by Iranian modernist Parviz Tanavoli and a bold geometric canvas by Iraqi-British artist Atiyeh Mousavi.
