Pakistani artists made the world's largest copy of the Holy Quran
Renowned Pakistani artist Shahid Rasam and more than 200 of his colleagues are working on the preparation of the world's largest copy of the Quran. The unique project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

A rare work of art with a length of 8.5 feet (2.59 meters) and a width of 6.5 feet is ready to break the record currently set by a 6.5-by-4.5-foot copy of the Quran, which was prepared in Afghanistan in 2017 and is currently stored in the Kul Sharif Mosque in Kazan.

According to Rassam, this is the first time in the more than 1400-year history of Islam when the Quran is cast from aluminum. Calligraphers previously engaged in the classical art of making copies of the holy book using common materials such as wood, paper, animal skin and fabric.

Over the past few months, 49-year-old Rasam, who took two years to prepare the first two pages of the holy Quran, spent an average of 10 hours a day on this project.

The artist notes:"This is quite a difficult task and equally delicate (from the point of view of the sanctity of the Quran). One minor mistake can ruin all efforts".

It is worth saying that at the EXPO 2020 Exhibition currently taking place in Dubai, Rassam will present the first sample of his work of art, Surah Ar-Rahman – the 55th chapter of the Quran. The Karachi-based artist said his work is inspired by Turkish, Arabic and Iranian art designs.

In the first stage, he says, the letters are cast from clay, which is then plastered and finally turned into fiber before being cast from aluminum.

More than 200 kilograms of gold, 2,000 kilograms of aluminum and 600 rolls of canvas will be used to write 77,430 words on 550 pages. According to him, precious stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds will also be used to illuminate and enrich the design.

Italian glazing technique and acrylic colors were used to develop the design, as they can last for hundreds of years.

Rasam said that he started this project on his own and is still spending his own resources on it, but over time, the governments of some countries began to contact him about his project.

The artist says that this work is intended not only for Muslims, but for the whole world to show the world the beauty of Islamic culture and art.
