Restoration of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, begins
Comprehensive restoration work has begun in the northwestern province of Edirne on the Selimiye Mosque, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a cult structure of Turkish-Islamic architecture.

The restoration is expected to be completed in 2025. During the work, the mosque will be open for worship and visits.

Added to the UNESCO list in 2011, the Selimiye Mosque and its municipal complex in Edirne were built in 1575 by Mimar Sinan, the most famous Ottoman architect of the 16th century. The complex includes a madrasah, an indoor market, a clock house, a courtyard and a library. "A square mosque with one large dome and four minarets rises above the horizon of the former Ottoman capital Edirne," the UNESCO website informs.

The mosque is decorated with tiles from the city of Iznik in the northwestern province of Bursa, which was famous for its ceramics in the 15th and 16th centuries.
