Saudi Arabia Conference explores the unique history of mosques
Mosque: Innovations in Object, Form and Function”, an international conference held by the King AbdulAziz Center for World Culture, accentuates the unique history and evolution of the mosque. The three-day event starts on 23rd of November in Ithra.

The history of mosques is uniquely different, especially when viewed through the prism of art and architecture," said Abdullah K. Al-Rashid, director of Ithra. "It reflects our identity and culture and deserves to be studied, preserved and presented for posterity," he added in a published statement.

Architects, designers, archaeologists, artists, writers, historians will come together to explore the rich history of mosques through the presentation of original research and information about cultural sites associated with mosques, as well as the demonstration of a range of items, from architectural decorations such as calligraphy and arabesques, to furniture for mosques, including lamps, prayer mats and stands for the Quran.

The purpose of the conference is “to share knowledge and expand people's understanding of the historical significance, evolution and functioning of the mosque”" the press release says.

The event will discuss the evolution and aesthetics of the mosque, the beauty and functions of objects found in the place of worship, as well as the preservation and revival of the mosque.

The three-day conference will be held in conjunction with a concurring exhibition titled “Almasjid Tent: The Art of Orientation,” which brings together the largest collection of Islamic art ever exhibited in Saudi Arabia, including several items from the two holy mosques of Makkah and Medina, provided by the National Museum of Riyadh.
