The newest exhibition at the Louvre Abu Dhabi dedicated to the history of Chinese-Islamic cooperation
The history of cultural exchange between the Islamic world and China will be revealed at the latest exhibition at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will begin next month and last all winter.

The exhibition entitled "The Dragon and the Phoenix, a Centuries-old exchange between the Chinese and Islamic Worlds" demonstrates the interaction between the Chinese and Islamic civilizations from the 8th to the 18th centuries.
It will open on 6th of October and close on 12th of February, 2022, organized in cooperation with the National Museum of Asian Arts – Gime.

Visitors will be able to get acquainted with cultural ties thanks to more than 200 works of art from the collections of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guimet Museum and 12 other international museums and institutions, as well as a diverse cultural program.

The Dragon and the Phoenix embody two cultures, China-the Dragon and the Islamic world-the Phoenix, distinguished over 800 years of exchange along land and sea trade routes, from the creation of the first Arab trading colonies in Canton in the 8th century to the beginning of the 18th century. Traveling from Mashriq and the Arabian Peninsula through Central Asia and the Indian Ocean, as well as to China and Vietnam, the exhibition reveals a long and rich history of mutual charm and inspiration.

The exhibition is curated by Sophie Makariou (President of the National Museum of Asian Arts) with the support of Dr. Suray Noujaim, Director of the Louvre Abu Dhabi for Scientific, Curatorial Issues and Collection Management, and Guillem Andre, Chief Curator of the Louvre Abu Dhabi for Asian and medieval art.

With more than 200 artifacts presented in five sections, the first four of which correspond to the historical timeline, and the fifth is dedicated to the literary traditions of calligraphy and poetry, the Dragon and the Phoenix demonstrate this history of the changing global environment of artistic and cultural exchanges in early times.

The exhibition presents a variety of works of art, including paintings, silverware, ceramics, glassware, manuscripts and luxury fabrics, and other various accessories, including Arabic epigraphy, porcelain, lotuses, geometric ornaments, dragons, phoenixes and many other fantastic bestiaries.

The Dragon and Phoenix collection includes works of art from the collection of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, as well as items from the National Museum of Asian Arts – Guimet, the Louvre Museum, the museum on the Branly – Jacques Chirac embankment, the National Archive, the Cité de la Ceramica-Sevres and Limoges, the National Library of France, the Musee de Cluny - the National Museum of the Middle Ages, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Jacquemart-Andre Museum-the Institute of France, the National Renaissance Museum-Chateau D'equin, the National Museum of Natural History and the French Fabric Museum in Lyon.

The cultural program for Dragon and Phoenix is a sensory journey through the narrative of the exhibition and will present various events and projects, including carefully selected weekend film screenings and dragon ships as a new seasonal offer, in addition to the current yoga and kayaking classes at the museum.
